New Year, New Eyes

Welcome back to another great year at The Post! This year, we had an overwhelming flood of new freshmen photographers get involved with The Post, more than we’ve had in years. It’s wonderful to have new pairs of eyes at the paper and we’re so excited to see how they grow throughout the year! Hi! My name is Kaitlin Owens. I’ll be starting my sophomore year at Ohio University this fall and I am also a staff photographer at The Post. I’ve done more commercial type work this summer than anything. Recently, I photographed Daniel Chimusoro, an up and coming musician in Cincinnati, and also a clothing line that debuted last week called Royales Clothing.

Athens to Muskegon to New York City

Hi again, Jason here, so I’ve done quite a lot of moving recently but I think I finally settled on a location. Leaving Athens was bittersweet, not knowing when I would be back to this strange part of Ohio, but very eager to explore another part of the United States. After a few weeks relaxing with my family I made the move to Muskegon to start my internship at The Muskegon Chronicle. That however that was short lived, and 12 short days later I was packing my things, and moving to New York. Since then, I’ve been networking, and trying to break into the freelance photojournalism world. I’ve been emailing several publications I think I’d be a good fit for, and even some commercial studios so I can learn that side of photography as well. It’s been a lot of sitting at my laptop, but I have been experimenting with different types of photography as well, I’ve been attempting, and so far failing at infrared photography. Here is a mix of what I did in Michigan, and some film and digital work from New York City. To stay up to date with my work go to my tumblr here. June in the Midwest

My name is Katie Klann and I will be entering my junior year as a photojournalism student at Ohio University. I will be serving as a photo editor for this upcoming year for The Post.

This summer, I do not have an internship. This has proved to be quite the challenge for me, as I am trying to keep shooting as often as possible. Without having some sort of publication behind me, pushing me to go out and take photos, I had a rough start. I looked for festivals nearby or brought my camera with me when I went out for the day.

The photos below are from three separate occasions. The first set of photos is from a festival in the town next to my hometown. Next is a photo from our volunteer fire department’s extrication practice, where they taught new members how to use the jaws of life on a junk car. Finally, I spent this past weekend as a tourist in Chicago.

I plan to keep shooting for myself and enjoying it along the way! It’s helped me to rediscover why I fell in love with photojournalism.

Steel City Summer

My name is Emily Harger, I am currently a junior at Ohio University studying photojournalism and am a photo editor at The Post this coming year.

This summer, I’m going back to my roots and spending the summer in my hometown city interning at the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. At first I was hesitant to head home for another summer. However, after finding a place to live actually in the city as opposed to my small town of Monongahela an hour or so south, everyday feels new and exciting. Spending what will probably be one of my last summers in Pittsburgh has allowed me to grow so much pride in this city, its people, and its culture. I am so excited to be photographing here for the next three months and exploring the hills that I’ve known and loved for 19 years.

Outside Missouri

I returned from my first year in Athens wide eyed and filled with the experience of new people, places and photography experiences. I came home to Missouri for a few weeks before a summer study abroad program, and took time to photograph some of the natural beauty of my home town. A wary cat befriended me at Longview Farm Park. Like most humans, it was unsure of the camera at first, but quickly got used to the black box seemingly attached to my hand.

A therapy horse at Longview Farm Park stands in the late afternoon sun. Cared for entirely by a group of volunteers, these horses provide health benefits and help teach children with special needs compassion and self-esteem.

Snow Day!

Ohio University’s campus was closed yesterday after Athens was hit with a severe snowstorm. Snow began falling Sunday evening and continued through Monday morning. Snow totals in the area ranged from 6-8 inches. Our Post staff took to the streets with their cameras, photographing various snow day activities ranging from sledding, to snow ball fights, to even skiing. Photographing Another World

I spent my winter break on a study abroad trip in Accra, Ghana with a group of other Ohio University students with the Scripps International Institute of Journalism. This was my first time traveling out of the United States and was excited to explore a new country with my camera. The most meaningful experience during my three weeks spent abroad was the time that I spent at Street Sisters Daycare.

I will never forget the moment that I, along with three of my colleagues, pulled up to the daycare and our car was swarmed nearly 40 children chanting ‘Oburoni,’ which means ‘white person.’ As we stepped out of the car each of us were surrounded by nearly 10 children hugging us, motioning for us to pick them up, and kissing our skin. We were a spectacle to the children, as most of them had never seen a white person in the flesh before. Many hours during our two days at the daycare were filled with the kids playing with our hair and sitting on our laps, utterly amazed at people who were so opposite of them.

The images that I made there are ones that I will cherish for the rest of my life and are to me what really made my trip worth it. I’ve never had more fun photographing before because to these children, it was as if I were doing magic. There I was, holding a bulky, black contraption and pressing a button that made their faces appear before their eyes. It was truly a magical experience as a photographer, and for those on the other side of my lens.
